Chapter Thirteen

Callie’s campaign to show Fritz and his guardsmen in a better light must have been working, for he saw no more evidence of rumors circulating about them. The newspapers found more worthy stories to cover. The people he and his men met when ferrying artwork around London and ultimately to the Athenian Rooms treated them with friendly interest rather than fear and indictment.

“And we have a dog,” Leo said when Fritz told him what he’d observed. His twin glanced to the large black puddle of fur spread out before the fire in the salon. Dolph must have had no concerns, for he straightened his muscular legs and groaned in appreciation.

“The fact still shocks me as well,” Fritz told his brother. “But he seems to have settled into palace life, thanks to the footman you assigned to him, and Wyss tells me he prowls the corridors at night on occasion, guarding us.”

As if to prove as much, Dolph raised his head off the carpet a moment before Lawrence traipsed into the room. The hound didn’t growl, but the sight of him stopped the Lord Chamberlain in his tracks.

“I thought we agreed to keep that beast outside,” he said. “I distinctly remember ordering one of the boxes in the stables cleared out for it.”

No one Fritz knew was getting put in a cage.

“He would only attempt to herd the horses,” Fritz said. He patted the side of his chair, and the Sennenhund rose to join him. A rub of the dog’s ponderous head was enough to set Dolph to sighing happily.

“The kitchens, then,” Lawrence persisted, though he made no further move into the room, as if prepared to flee at the least sign of aggression from the dog.

“Only if you want the roast and mutton to go missing on a regular basis,” Fritz warned.

Leo took pity on the chamberlain. “Did you have need of us, Lawrence?”

“Nothing that cannot wait, Your Highness.” With a sniff, Lawrence stalked out.

Fritz scratched behind Dolph’s ear. “I knew I liked you.”
